“Burnout happens everywhere, right? It is not just health care – it’s firefighters, it’s police, it’s teachers, it’s burned out as a mom, as a spouse, as a friend…and it’s awful. We don’t want to be in burnout,” says Dr. Lara Salyer. In this episode, Dr. Lara Salyer, alongside Dr. Polly Watson, discusses burnout and what we can do about it. Dr. Salyer highlights the importance of recognizing burnout and how to incorporate flow state into your daily routine to counteract the effects of burnout. She also emphasizes the importance of advocating for yourself through boundary setting and seeking outside support, especially during transitions like menopause when individuals may need to establish new boundaries to prioritize self-care.

This episode covers the concept of enhancing and disrupting flow as well as the often-overlooked phase of recovery. Dr. Watson and Dr. Salyer shed light on the importance of respecting these cycles to improve productivity, find greater meaning in tasks and sustain long-term well-being. Additionally, Dr. Salyer underscored the value of aligning personal values with professional goals to facilitate a more authentic and fulfilling flow experience.

After spending 15 years as a rural family medicine physician, Dr. Lara Salyer found herself struggling with burnout. She turned to painting, drawing, and running, which sparked her interest in the effects of stress and cortisol on physiology. Integrating this training into her patient care, she now runs her own holistic health practice in Wisconsin and developed the Catalyst Way, a method to help practitioners redesign their careers with creativity and efficiency. Dr. Salyer’s holistic approach to achieving flow and supporting recovery serves as a beacon for individuals navigating high-pressure environments, advocating for self-compassion and practicality in pursuit of optimal well-being.

Quotes:

  • “Burnout happens everywhere, right? Dr. Polly, I mean, it is not just health care, it’s firefighters, it’s police, it’s teachers, it’s burned out as a mom, as a spouse, as a friend. I mean, burnout is a term that is the worst because it’s sort of the end result of chronic stress and cortisol depletion. And it’s awful. We don’t want to be in burnout.”
  • “You love being in flow. It feels good. So you don’t want to break it, but we have to. We have to pause and recover and unplug and go out and touch grass and do the yoga and the breathing”
  • “We often think of reward as like, okay, let’s eat some chocolate. Let’s have a glass of wine. And hello. I’m talking to you, menopausal ladies. That’s no longer a good reward. Start to explore the other options for rewards.”
